  • Buddha's Finger Bone Placed on Display - SEOUL, South Korea - A 2,500-year-old fragment of bone believed to be one of Buddha's fingers went on public display in Seoul Friday after arriving from China, officials said. It has been assumed that this finger is not, in fact, the famed Middle Finger of Buddha, a fact which led to a resounding sigh of relief by Escatologists everywhere. It has long been believed that the true end of the world will be marked by the discovery of the Middle Finger of Buddha, a sign marking the end of Buddha's tolerance for humankind's little foibles. The bone, which arrived around 5 a.m., was sent to an indoor stadium in southern Seoul for a temporary exhibit after a ceremony at Jogye Temple, said Jin Yeo-shim, a temple official. The temple is the headquarters of Jogye Order, South Korea's largest Buddhist sect. The bone was discovered in a hidden chamber at the Famen Temple in 1987 and was believed to have lain there undisturbed for 1,000 years, Xinhua said. It was believed to have been enshrined by China's imperial family during the Tang dynasty, which ruled from 618 to 907.
  • Hunting Season Opens for Mythical Creature - STOCKHOLM, Sweden - A mythical monster, believed by some to have lived for hundreds of years in the murky depths of a Swedish lake, is now fair game for hunters _ if they can find it. Authorities have agreed to lift its endangered species protection. Hundreds of people claim to have spotted a large serpent-like creature in Lake Storsjon in the northwestern province of Jamtland, and in 1986 the regional council put it on a list of endangered animals. "It exists, inasmuch as it lives in the minds of people," the council's chief legal adviser Peter Lif said about the purported beast. "But I guess we'll have to agree that it cannot be proved scientifically, and then it should not be listed as an endangered species. The party is over, SnakeBoy" The so-called Storsjo monster was first mentioned in print in 1635. Hundreds of sightings have been reported since then. Some people describe the creature as a snakelike animal with a dog's head and fins on its neck. But no clear image of it has been captured on camera.
